ATMOSPHERIC ANGLING
THE WEEKLY BRIEFING · 21 August 2026
ISSUE 1 · FIRST EDITION

FRI 21 AUG — THU 27 AUG

Brief ridge of high pressure from Saturday to Monday between two unsettled spells.

Welcome to our first Atmospheric Angling Newsletter, and what a change in the weather! We've moved to a much more dynamic atmospheric circulation pattern following weeks of high-pressure being generally in charge. This change will likely bring better fishing conditions, with water bodies being gradually replenished. Having said that commercial carp fisheries have been doing very well throughout the hot conditions. However, after such a dry spell the change can bring its own challenges: with heavy rainfall Disolved Oxygen may temporarily drop with large amounts of sediment etc being washed into water bodies.

── THIS WEEK'S PATTERN

The week ahead across the Wales and Welsh Borders region sees pressure close to the seasonal average (+0.0 hPa vs the 1991-2020 mean) at around 1015 hPa on average, with significant changes through the week. Winds are predominantly from the ENE (switching from a northerly on Sunday), averaging 6.5 mph. Total rainfall across the region looks substantial at around 21 mm over the week, but there is a lot of uncertainty across the models into the middle part of next week.

WHAT TO TARGET

Barbel — Favouring — A new south or south-westerly wind, particularly after stale conditions, typically triggers feeding across species. The bigger effect this week though will be from the increased rainfall. Until then, rivers still below the 25th percentile and favour careful approach work — fish are concentrated in deeper holding pools and are spookable. Early morning, late evening, or night sessions produce most consistent results.
